What is Lithuania like?

Lithuania is a country with a Catholic background, and a former Soviet state. Lithuania joined the EU and NATO in 2004. Since independence Lithuania's biggest challenges are migration, bureaucracy and corruption. Nevertheless Lithuanians have something to be proud of: beautiful scenery with many lakes and rivers, one of the world's oldest surviving language, tasty traditional cuisine and beer, and the great game of basketball.

What is the present state of the work?

There are 23 universities and 125,000 university students in Lithuania.

A student ministry has been established and nationals are widely involved. At the moment there are 3 full-time staff workers. There is an ongoing challenge to continue the work in most places. Most groups cease to exist after 4 or 5 years after they have started, partly due to fairly low number of students involved. Therfore groups need ongoing support from staff and volunteers. Currently there are active groups in Vilnius and Kaunas, as well as many contacts in Klaipeda and Siauliai where we are experiencing a „generational gap". These groups need a lot of help from staff workers.

There is a growing number of international students. This is very exiting because there are a lot of opportunities to get involved with international students and the universities' administration would welcome initiatives, but there are not enough hands on deck to do the work. We need more workers in the harvest field!

What are the main areas of ministry?

There are three main areas of ministry - evangelism, discipleship of Lithuanian students, and pioneering student groups. Evangelism is carried out through every possible means, but especially through personal friendships and evangelistic Bible studies.

What about accommodation, living costs, courses, jobs?

In general, living costs are lower than in Western Europe but they are also increasing steadily. Depending on the location of the appartament, you would need to spend about 320 EUR per month for accommodation and 180 EUR per month for other living expenses. In addition there is the cost of traveling to and from Lithuania and personal ministry expenses (traveling, hospitality, IFES conferences, etc.).  Most probably you will have to take language lessons in the university or privatly which will incur tuition fees.

It may well be possible to get a part-time teaching job but this should not be expected to provide the main source of income.

What special requirements are there?

Visas: For some nationalities a visa or residence permit is necessary. Visas are not needed for citizens of EU member countries and countries belonging to the Schengen area.

Language: Learning the national language is a major priority for ministry: it demonstrates serious respect for the local culture. Team members can either take language courses at the university or privately. It is generally possible to gain some conversational ability by the second semester, and this makes ministry much easier.
