What is Hungary like?
Hungary is a post-communist country with a colourful history located in Central-Europe. The capital city, Budapest is a popular tourist destination with 10 million visitors per year. The official language is Hungarian, as a foreign language mostly English or German are taught in school.
What is the present state of work?
The national student movement, MEKDSz, officially restarted after the revolution in 1989. Today 7 staff members work with the movement, with help from other volunteers. In Hungary there are 20-25 student groups, which are attended by 5-10 members each. The staff members frequently visit student groups in Budapest as well as in other university cities in Hungary. MEKDSZ has a strong graduate ministry which has a prayer groups and mentoring schemes for current students. Students and graduates meet twice a year for the national conferences. The winter conference is larger with 400 attendants, whereas the summer conference (called Grund) is attended by 100 students.
What does the Team do?
The IFES InterAction team aims to reach out to international students in Hungary and to help in organising MEKDSz events and conferences. There are many short term students participating in exchange programs (e.g. Erasmus), as well as long term students who are attending a whole study program in Hungary (e.g. medical students from other continents). There are currently one international MEKDSz group in Budapest.
What about accommodation, living costs, courses, jobs?
Financial support is normally raised from churches, friends and family back home. Team members are helped to settle in by the Hungarian ISM worker.
What special requirements are there for joining the Hungarian InterAction Team?
A visa is required for Non-European countries.
A majority Christian country but with very few evangelicals (2.8%).
