The Baltic States have seen very encouraging pioneering student ministry in the last five years. Currently there is an IFES InterAction team in Lithuania. In all three countries the standard of living, while not up to western standards, is significantly higher than in other countries of the former USSR. The nearness to Scandinavia is evident. In Latvia and Estonia there is a large Russian minority and in Lithuania a smaller one. The Baltic countries are since 2004 members of the EU and NATO, which will make their societies more stable and predictable. Laws restricting freedom will not be passed. Dealing with bureaucracy will still be a challenge. |
