Estonia was the first ex-USSR country to develop its own national student movement. Now the Eesti Evangeelsete Üliõpilaste Ühendus (EEÜÜ) has student groups at five universities in two cities, Tartu and Tallinn, the capital. In 2001 the EEÜÜ group in Tallinn decided to try to start new groups in the city’s other universities. They have established two groups; students at the Academy of Music meet weekly in the public cafeteria.
The 80 students that are involved in EEÜÜ seek to share the gospel through personal contacts and small group Bible studies. But it is a huge task; there are 50,000 students. Often Christian students understand the need to share the gospel, but they find it hard. One of the biggest problems is that staff usually change every two or three years, just as they start to understand the vision of the work. EEÜÜ needs more staff to help the work grow.
IFES InterAction aims to serve and support EEÜÜ by sending graduates and students who are committed to share their life and faith with students and who are enthusiastic about the work God is doing in the student world. |
